364. the tortoise is lost for the nth time

the tortoise wandered through the dark woods, looking for features he recognized, looking for a path back to the village, and most importantly, looking for his wife.

he wondered to himself, “what if i never find my way out? what if i never find my village? what if i never find my wife? do these things matter anymore, if they are forever lost? or do they matter because i keep them in my memory? so long as i do not find myself, my wife is not lost, she is not. and if she is not, then why am i looking for her?

while he was thinking, he walked right past his wife, who exclaimed, “tortoise!

he turned around and saw her and his eyes alit with happiness.

i thought you didn’t exist!” he exclaimed.
