514. the irregularity of time

[php function=12] said, “you promise a kōan every day, but they do not come daily. sometimes, we wait weeks. other days, there are two back-to-back.”

the guru said, “your mistake is that you think that time proceeds regularly.”

[php function=14] said, “is a day not determined by the rising and the setting of the sun?”

the guru said, “no.

“then by what?”

“by the kōans themselves.”

“then time is regular. every day has one kōan. and therefore time moves regularly.”

“look, i thought you were just hassling me about being lazy. now it feels like you’re questioning my metaphysics.”

“it’s the same thing,” [php function=14] replied.
